< Home < Tips Area < Rod Selection < 7 Weight Rods A friend of mine wants an 8 foot 7 wt 3 piece. I've been building Dickerson 7613's and like them so I thought I would build a Dickerson 8015 Guide converted to a 3 piece. Got the taper on rodbuilding forum. Has anybody had experience with this taper? (Michael Allen) I've had a Guide taper rod for years and like it a lot. Used it in NZ mainly on the faster rivers where it was excellent. Casts a very long way and because it's such a stiff rod it's good in wind. The largest I caught with it was a 9.5lb Brown (weighed) on the Waitahu R and the rod had something left in it for more so it's beefy. (Tony Young) What kind of fishing will he be using it for? I have made two of the 8014G 6/7 taper found in Howell’s book (he also lists the taper for the 8015G). I can tell you the 8014G is a real cannon. I’ve used this rod for everything from trout to bass, pike, and even 30-pound carp in the Colorado River. IMO it’s a little more versatile and in the right hands (not mine) it will punch out most of a fly line into the wind. (Tom Vagell) I too have made a couple of the 8014 G’s and I’ve managed to land many 10+ lb. largemouth here in Central Florida. It’s a real strong rod and a real straight shooter. Recommend it highly. (Ren Monllor) Kathy and I have 8014G's from Howell's book and agree fully with what Tom says. We've caught large (6 - 7 lb.) Brook Trout in Labrador in fast current with no problem. The rods can handle heavy flies or small dry flies. Kathy is making a 3 pc. version that I converted with Hexrod from the 2 pc. We'll see how that works soon ...... (David Van Burgel) Sounds like the 8014 will get the job done. Thanks to all for the info. (Michael Allen) I also made one from Howells book for streamer fishing on the Madison. Worked great but it likes the 7wt better than the 6 wt line. Is that everyone's experience? (Jim Miller) I have built the 8014 G and the 8015 GS for steelhead fishing here in Oregon. Both using the numbers from Howells book. The 8014 likes a WF7 steelhead taper line and the 8015 likes a WF 8 Steelhead taper line. (Mark Heskett) Yup, the 8014G’s I have made do best w/ 7 wts. (David Van Burgel) Yes. I also used howells taper. I use mine just for bass fishing and have it lined with a 7 weight. Great rod. (Rick Barbato) I made the 8014 for hex fishing on the Manistee in Michigan & have taken browns to 9#s with it. Just used it a few days ago on the Colorado @ Lees Ferry @ in both cases I used mine with a 6 weight. (Bret Reiter) |
